DEFINITION
The ability to select the most effective option
WHAT IS IT?
Decision making involves evaluating and assessing various ideas or options using logic and reasoning. It requires the skill to compare and weigh the relative advantages of different choices.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Organizations are at risk of failure and decline from poor decisions. Each major decision needs careful analysis and consideration. Employees with strong decision-making skills are invaluable to companies. Clear thinking and sound decision-making are essential traits of effective leaders.
Before making a decision, clearly outline the qualities of an ideal solution. For instance, a marketing director might define the best advertising campaign as one that attracts customers, integrates seamlessly with the current marketing strategy, and remains cost-effective. Detailing these criteria helps evaluate the available options. Many overlook this step, assuming the criteria are obvious, but they often are not.
Each option under consideration must be thoroughly evaluated. Identify and articulate the strengths and weaknesses of each choice. Create a list of pros and cons for each potential solution to help determine the most viable option.
While managers often carry the final responsibility for decisions, it’s valuable to seek input from others. Colleagues who have faced similar situations can offer valuable insights. Gathering perspectives from a range of people can reveal aspects you might have missed. Important decisions related to strategy, hiring, or project plans should benefit from as much input as possible.
