DEFINITION
The ability to achieve results
WHAT IS IT?
Execution involves developing a detailed plan to reach a specific goal and seeing it through to completion. It requires adapting the plan as needed and overcoming obstacles to deliver results consistently.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Murphy’s Law reminds us that problems are inevitable and plans seldom go perfectly. If managers abandoned their goals at the first sign of trouble, their organizations would struggle. Effective managers must remain focused on deadlines, address issues promptly, and find creative solutions to ensure that objectives are met.
Managers should be adept at creating comprehensive plans that outline all major tasks of a project and assign them to the appropriate individuals. Gantt charts are effective tools for this purpose, helping to map out each task, assign responsibilities, and set deadlines. They also track task dependencies, which can highlight potential bottlenecks that may delay progress. This approach provides a visual representation of the project timeline.
Effective managers ensure timely execution by consistently obtaining updates from their team members. They do not leave progress to chance but instead maintain regular communication, whether weekly or even daily, to monitor deadlines and hold team members accountable.
To enhance execution skills, managers should anticipate potential issues before they arise. Proactively address emerging problems to prevent them from escalating. Identify the major challenges currently faced, document them, and develop a proactive plan to manage these issues effectively.
