DEFINITION
Goal-oriented and inspirational
WHAT IS IT?
Motivating others involves a manager's ability to envision achievable goals and inspire their team to share that enthusiasm. Effective managers make team members feel that their contributions are part of something significant. Visionary leaders create a compelling vision that captures the passion and commitment of their employees.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Without a clear and inspiring vision, employees may lose interest and become disengaged. This lack of motivation can lead to significant losses in productivity and performance, costing companies billions each year. Managers often face frustration when employees show minimal effort and fail to reach their potential. A strong, engaging vision helps counteract these issues by encouraging employees to invest fully in their work.
Managers must first develop a clear and attainable vision of what can be achieved. They need to set a concrete goal and genuinely believe in its feasibility. This vision should be communicated passionately and repeatedly to the team. Ambitious goals capture attention and inspire commitment.
Managers should ensure that every team member understands the significance of their contributions. Each person needs to feel that their work is important and that they are valued. Optimal team performance relies on every member doing their best, and one effective way to motivate them is to highlight the necessity of their individual roles.
Effective managers excel at telling inspiring stories, whether about a customer benefiting from their product or team members exceeding expectations. Crafting compelling stories requires careful thought and planning. If storytelling doesn’t come naturally, write out the details and practice delivering them with enthusiasm and passion to engage your team.
