DEFINITION
Understanding others' attitudes and behaviors
WHAT IS IT?
Social awareness is the ability to accurately perceive and comprehend the attitudes, emotions, and behaviors of others.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
In virtually every profession, interacting with bosses, colleagues, and customers is a routine part of work. While these interactions can make work enjoyable, they can also present challenges. Every individual has their own strengths, weaknesses, quirks, and triggers. To be effective in our careers, we must be keen observers of human nature and interpersonal dynamics.
First, we need to be more attentive and observant of those around us. Pay attention not only to what people say but also to their tone, facial expressions, and body language. Understand what motivates or discourages them, and recognize what matters to them. Observing these aspects helps us gain insight into their personalities and how we can connect with them more effectively.
It's easy to assume we understand someone else's situation, but we might be mistaken. To get an accurate sense of what others are experiencing, it's helpful to ask directly. For example, “Kim, you seem stressed lately. Is there something you’d like to talk about?” Or, in response to a specific comment, a manager might say, “It sounds like you feel strongly about this issue. Is that correct?” Asking clarifying questions helps us better understand what others are going through and what they’re trying to communicate.
Some people may be unaware of how their behavior affects others and may not realize they are not connecting effectively. They might miss non-verbal cues like closed posture or disinterest. If you're unsure how you’re coming across, be more conscious of others’ responses. Look for signs of engagement and attentiveness to gauge how well your message is being received.
